Culture Night: Our Evolving Relationship with Life Below Water Interactive Event

Our Evolving Relationship with Life Below Water interactive event combines:

  • a drop-in exhibition tour in Special Collections, UCC Library
  • a sound installation in response to items in the exhibition
  • hands-on activities for the visitor to respond to on the ground floor of UCC Library. Children must be supervised at all times by their grown-ups.

Please note, the entrance to the library will be through the Quad Reading Room (to the right of the main entrance) on the day of this event.

The drop-in tour includes maps, posters, prints and books of historical voyages of exploration and scientific investigations of seas and lakes in UCC Library’s Special Collections to explore and consider how historical stories, discoveries and ideas from the 16th century to the present continue to shape and impact our world. In addition, the exhibition includes artwork from Sophie, a student at Scoil Eanna, who responded to a prompt from UCC's Skills Centre to create artwork in paint or charcoal or pencils or crayons or markers or textiles which they believe reflects what can be found in their local rivers, lakes and beaches.

The sound installation includes field recordings from Lough Hyne, West Cork and was created by Tadhg Dennehy. Katie McShane selected various images as points of inspiration for you. Respond to Katie's image selections via 3D prints, colouring sheets and play-doh to create your response to Our Evolving Relationship with Life Below Water.

Our Evolving Relationship with Life Below Water draws on UN's SDG 14: Life Below WaterUCC’s Sustainable Development Goals Toolkit and demonstrates why a greater awareness and understanding of UN SDG 14 is required by all. Following Culture Night an online version of the exhibition will be available.

This interactive event is also part of European Sustainable Development Week (ESDW) 2023.

Please note, the entrance to the library will be through the Quad Reading Room (to the right of the main entrance) on the day of this event.
