Punks Listen, Cork Launch In-Person

UCC Library are very excited to be hosting the Cork launch of Punks Listen, a book about 'favourite records'

On the evening some special guests will join a panel talk about the records that mean the most to them, and they will discuss the ways that music has influenced and inspired them.

Speakers confirmed are:

  • Siobhán Bardsley (Cork Zine Archive)
  • Elvera Butler (Promoter, Reekus Records owner, UCC Downtown Kampus)
  • Emily Dollery (UCC, Set Guitars to Kill)
  • Dr. Emily Gale (UCC Popular Music Studies)
  • Dr. Eileen Hogan (UCC School of Applied Social Studies)
  • Rob McKahey (Stump)
  • Colm O'Callaghan (The Blackpool Sentinel Blog, RTÉ)
  • Ciarán Ó Tuama (Cypress Mine, Used To Be)
  • John Perry (The Only Ones)
  • Stephen Travers (Miami Showband)

The editors Michael Murphy and Niall McGuirk (Hope Collective) will say a few words and moderate the event.

There will also be a raffle, to raise funds, which will give people the opportunity to win 

  • A gift bundle of books by some of the authors featured in the book (Roddy Doyle, Sinéad Gleeson, Patrick Freyne and Rónán Hession)
  • A bundle of vinyl records
  • A bundle of CDs by Stano

Opening the event will be Crónán O Doibhlin, Interim University Librarian, Head of Research Collections.

PUNKS LISTEN is the third in a series of ‘benefit books’ from the Hope Collective, Dublin’s punk/Do-It-Yourself group.

It’s raising funds for the Irish Red Cross Ukraine Refugee appeal.

The new book is a collection of pieces of writing from musicians, writers, actors and music fans. They were asked to write about a record (or a gig) that was significant to them. The book includes over 280 contributions from people including some UCC colleagues Eileen Hogan (UCC School of Applied Social Studies), Paul Burgess (UCC School of Applied Studies) and Áine Mangaoang (UCC Music graduate). Amanda Palmer, Suggs (Madness), Roddy Doyle (The Commitments), Mike Scott (The Waterboys), Gaye Black (The Adverts), Henry Rollins, Andy Cairns (Therapy?), Mike Watt (Minutemen), Josephine Wiggs (The Breeders), Kevin Godley (10cc), Tim Burgess (The Charlatans), Aidan Gillen (The Wire, Game of Thrones etc), Sinéad Gleeson (author, Constellations etc) ,Roisin Dwyer (Hot Press), Cathal Coughlan (R.I.P.) Microdisney, Fatima Mansions as well as pieces written by members of Wilco, Horslips, Generation X, Public Image Ltd, The Revillos, Crass, Gang of Four, The Wedding Present, Fugazi and the Radiators from Space (Ireland’s first punk band!).
