Metadata is data about data, and it is a key enabler of FAIR and Open Data. For data to be FAIR the associated metadata must be unambiguous and well described to facilitate the discovery, interoperability and reuse of data. Metadata can be human and machine readable and come in a variety of types depending on the object they are identifying or describing.  Metadata can take the form of ontologies, controlled vocabularies and schema but can also include things like file formats, persistent identifiers, licensing and documentation. 

During this workshop at the Dora Allman room in The Hub, Dr Pádraig Mac Aodhgáin and Caroline Philpott of UCC Library will demonstrate the value of metadata to a FAIR data ecosystem, different types of metadata and some examples of metadata standards. Participants will then use Lego to look at the difference between structured and unstructured metadata and how you can use metadata to ensure your data outputs are reproducible. Through this activity, we will look at how metadata is captured, recorded and disseminated and how you can incorporate metadata capture into your own work.
