Avoiding Plagiarism: Quoting, Paraphrasing and Creating References (Online)

Avoiding Plagiarism: Quoting, Paraphrasing and Creating References (Online) Online

This workshop will introduce you to the concepts of plagiarism and of acknowledging sources in your assignments and research. By the end of the workshop, you will be able to

  • Recognise and avoid practices that are classed as plagiarism
  • Recognise the difference between citations and references and their importance in academic writing
  • Apply a citation style to an information source
  • Identify some of the tools available to help with citing and referencing

We will cover the different ways that plagiarism can occur, and how it can best be avoided. There will also be demonstrations of how to acknowledge sources within academic writing, and how to create full references for sources, as well as hands-on activities to help you practise relevant skills.

This session is open to all UCC members - registration is required.

Directions: The Research Skills Teaching Room is on Floor Q-1 (the basement level) of the Boole Library. If you go through the double doors to the left of the Security Desk near the library entrance, and then down the stairs, the room is a short way along the corridor on your left.

Important - Here are some steps you must complete before you attend:

1. Please connect any smartphones/iPhones/laptops/other devices you have to the university's Wi-Fi network 'eduroam'. This will be needed to authenticate yourself when accessing Library resources in the session. Guidance on connecting to 'eduroam' is available from the Boole or Brookfield Libraries.

2a. Please install and register the Microsoft Authenticator app on your smartphone or iPhone with your UCC email address. There will be very limited or no phone signal available, so you will need the app to log into Library resources during the session's activities i.e. you won’t be able to complete MFA via text message or voice call.

2b. Once the app is installed and registered, please also go into its Update security info section and change the Default sign-in method to “App-based authentication – notification.” Full instructions are available via the UCC website: https://www.ucc.ie/en/it/services/mfa/, and you may contact Student IT for further assistance: https://www.ucc.ie/en/sit/
