Printed in Defiance: Making the 1916 Proclamation

Printed in Defiance: Making the 1916 Proclamation exhibition tells the powerful, behind‑the‑scenes story of the 1916 Proclamation. This exhibition shifts the focus from the famous words to the people who made its creation, survival and preservation possible. It tells a story of quiet courage, skilled labour and ordinary people whose choices ensured that the Proclamation did not vanish, but endured - allowing it to be read, questioned and re-examined by new generations today. The exhibition highlights courage, skilled labour and conservation that ensure this fragile document endures for future generations. Printed in Defiance: Making the 1916 Proclamation marks the 110th anniversary of its printing and features an original first‑issue copy. The exhibition was made possible with thanks to the generosity of Liam and Kaye Cronin who gifted this Proclamation to the University and  Cork University Foundation which provided support for the exhibition from philanthropic funds designated for heritage projects.

Watch Louise O’Connor A-ICRI, Conservator at UCC Library, describing the treatment undertaken by her and Luca de Cilladi, UCC Library Conservation intern, internship supported by the Heritage Council.
